Main roads play an important role in moving traffic around Bushey & Bushey Heath. For this reason, we would not propose that all main roads should have a 20mph speed limit. However, there may be sections of main roads where a 20mph speed limit can reduce traffic collisions and significantly improve road safety, such as where people need to get to places of worship, care homes, schools, parks or community facilities.

Are there any of the main roads listed below, or sections of these roads, where you think a 20mph speed limit should be considered?

High Street

High Street is an important route through Bushey, but its character varies along its length. It includes shops, schools and access to open space. While footways are generally continuous, they are sometimes narrow, meaning people walking can be close to passing traffic. People also cross the road at a variety of locations, not always at formal crossing points, reflecting the range of destinations along the street. The road can present challenges for people wishing to cycle, and lower vehicle speeds may also assist drivers entering and leaving parking bays and side roads.

5.

Sparrows Herne

South of the High Street, the character changes into Sparrows Herne, which is primarily residential but also includes local shops and the library. Footways are narrow in places and there are limited opportunities to cross the road, particularly where people wish to access local facilities. The road can also be challenging for people wishing to cycle.

6.

Elstree Road

Elstree Road is predominantly residential, although many properties are set back from the road. Footways are narrow in places and there are limited formal crossing opportunities, which may not always be located where people wish to cross, including near bus stops. The road can also be challenging for people wishing to cycle, particularly less confident cyclists.

7.

High Road

High Road is a wide road with footways on both sides. It serves a mix of residential properties, local shops and access to open spaces, and is used by people of all ages. While the footways are generally of a good width, there are limited formal crossing opportunities in some locations where people may wish to cross the road. The road can also be challenging for people wishing to cycle, particularly less confident cyclists.

8.

Little Bushey Lane (between Coldharbour Lane and Elstree Road)

Little Bushey Lane is a residential street that also functions as a local connecting route. It already includes traffic-calming features, has narrow footways and forms an important walking route for pupils travelling to and from Bushey Meads School.
