Hertfordshire County Council wants to hear your views on whether a 20mph speed limit would be appropriate for Harpenden.
Local feedback has suggested that lower speed limits may be appropriate in many parts of the town, particularly on residential streets such as Milton Road and Park Hill. Through our Right Place, Right Pace approach, we recognise that different roads serve different purposes. Some roads are places where people live, walk, wheel, cycle, shop, access schools and spend time, while others play an important role in helping people travel between communities.
This does not mean that every road would be subject to a 20mph limit. It is not anticipated that key approach roads, such as Walkers Road, St Albans Road, Redbourn Road and Luton Road, or rural lanes including Pipers Lane, Thrales End Lane, Cooters End Lane and Beesonend Lane, would be included.
We are asking residents, businesses, schools and local communities to help shape how a future 20mph scheme could look by telling us whether, and where, they believe lower speed limits are most appropriate. We also recognise that views differ on where 20mph limits should be used and that not every road will be suitable.
In particular, we would welcome your views on whether other key streets, including Southdown Road, Grove Road, Piggottshill Road, Station Road, High Street and Lower Luton Road, as well as the lanes crossing Harpenden Common, should be subject to a 20mph limit.
By completing this survey, your feedback will help us understand local priorities and inform the potential development of 20mph areas within Harpenden.

- Encourage walking, cycling and stronger communities - Slower streets encourage walking, cycling and outdoor activity, creating healthier and more welcoming communities.
- Reduce Traffic Noise - Lower speeds generate less noise creating calmer neighbourhoods.

A countywide YouGov survey suggests most people are in favour of 20mph limits around schools and where people live, but that main roads like Walkers Road, St Albans Road, Redbourn Road would not be considered for a 20mph speed limit, but we want to hear your views on Harpenden through this survey.
