Hatfield 20mph Area Engagement

Introduction 

Hertfordshire County Council wants to hear your views on where additional 20mph speed limits may be appropriate in Hatfield. Our aim is to create safer, calmer streets for residents, support children walking to school, and make it easier and safer for everyone to move around the area.

Section 1: Your views on 20mph speed limits

Main roads play an important role in moving traffic around Hatfield. For this reason, we would not propose that all main roads should have a 20mph speed limit. However, there may be sections of main roads where a 20mph speed limit can reduce traffic collisions and significantly improve road safety, such as where people need to get to places of worship, care homes, schools, parks or community facilities.

Multifunctional roads such as Bishops Rise, Travellers Lane, Woods Avenue and Wellfield Road

Residential roads that connect neighbourhoods with schools, shops, community facilities, the station, town centre and the university. They are important routes for walking and cycling and can be difficult to cross in places.

Key links in Birchwood such as Homestead Road and Birchwood Avenue

Key residential routes providing access to schools, the station and town centre. Walking and cycling form an important part of local journeys along these roads.

College Lane and Albatross Way

Roads serving the university where students regularly walk, cycle and cross the road to access teaching facilities and bus stops. Through traffic is limited by existing bus priority measures.

Lemsford Road

An important route connecting residential areas with the Alban Way, schools, the station and town centre. Walking and cycling are common, and people cycling are expected to use the carriageway.

Green Lanes (between Manor Road and Green Lanes Primary School)

A residential street with a primary school, local shopping area and existing traffic-calming features.

Mount Pleasant Lane

A residential route with narrow and variable footways, nearby schools, and links to local walking and cycling routes.

Great North Road (station section)

An important route for people accessing Hatfield station, with significant pedestrian movement and potential benefits for walking and cycling access.

Beaconsfield Road

A key route to the station with business frontages that also connects to nearby residential areas and supports walking and cycling journeys.
