Welcome to our consultation on a proposed 20mph speed limit in Markyate.

We are seeking your views on introducing a 20mph speed limit around residential streets and school areas in Markyate. Our aim is to create safer, calmer streets for residents, support children walking to school, and make it easier and safer for everyone to move around the area.

This page sets out our proposals and gives you the chance to share your views. By completing the survey, you can help us design a scheme that works for your area.

Why are we proposing a 20mph limit?

The proposed 20mph Speed Limit aims to:

  • Improve road safety - Lower speeds reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions, helping protect all road users. Early results from Wales show a 26% reduction is casualties in the first year.
  • Encourage active travel and stronger communities - Slower streets encourage walking, cycling and outdoor activity, creating healthier and more welcoming communities.
  • Better protection for pets and wildlife - Lower speeds give drivers more time to react and avoid animals in the road.

What are we proposing?

  • A 20mph speed limit across most roads in Markyate
On the map:
  • Green-highlighted roads indicate those proposed for the 20mph limit.
  • Blue-highlighted roads indicate speed reduction zones.
  • Black-highlighted roads indicate the existing 20mph roads.

*Speed reduction zones are roads designed to help drivers slow down before entering a 20 mph area, so they have a lower speed limit than the road leading into them.
