Welcome to our consultation on our plans to introduce 20mph areas in Hitchin.

We are seeking your views on introducing a 20mph speed limit across most roads in Hitchin. Our aim is to create safer, calmer streets for residents, support children walking to school, and make it easier and safer for everyone to move around the area.

The proposal would apply to most residential streets. We are also asking your views on including certain main roads where a lower speed limit may be more appropriate.

This page sets out our proposals and gives you the chance to share your views. By completing the survey, you can help us design a scheme that works for your area.

Why are we proposing a 20mph limit?

Key reasons include:

  • Improved safety
Fewer collisions occur with slower speeds and a person hit at 30mph is five times more likely to be killed than at 20mph.

  • Healthier communities
Safer streets encouraging walking, cycling and outdoor activities.

  • Quieter streets
    Lower speeds reduce noise pollution.

  • Stronger neighbourhoods
Calmer roads make public spaces more sociable and welcoming while better supporting children, older people and those with mobility impairments.

  • Smoother journeys
Journey times typically take only seconds longer on local trips and traffic moves most smoothly at speeds around 18–20mph under real world conditions.

  • Protects pets and wildlife
Drivers have more time to stop and avoid animals.

What are we proposing?

  • A 20mph speed limit across most roads in Hitchin
  • We are considering including some main roads, where a 20mph speed limit may be appropriate
  • Speed reduction zones of 30 or 40mph where required to transition to 20mph

On the maps:

  • Green-highlighted roads indicate those proposed for the 20mph limit.

  • Black-highlighted roads indicate the existing 20mph roads.

  • Blue-highlighted roads indicate speed reduction zones.

*Speed reduction zones are roads designed to help drivers slow down before entering a 20 mph area, so they have a lower speed limit than the road leading into them.
