Hertfordshire County Council wants to hear your views on where additional 20mph speed limits may be appropriate in St Albans.
While many streets in St Albans are already 20mph, we are now asking whether more residential streets should be included. Expanded areas could benefit residents living in The Verulam Estate, Marshalswick, Jersey Farm, Highfield and Longacres; supporting local journeys, getting to school and visiting community centres.
Our Right Place, Right Pace approach recognises that different roads serve different purposes. Some roads are places where people live, walk, wheel, cycle, shop, access schools and spend time, while others play an important role in helping people travel between communities.
We are asking residents, businesses, schools and local communities to help shape how a future 20mph scheme could look in their area by telling us if, and where they believe lower speed limits are most appropriate. We also recognise that views differ on where 20mph limits should be used and that not every road will be suitable.
By completing the survey, your feedback will help us understand local priorities and inform which additional streets in St Albans should have a 20mph speed limit.
20mph Speed Limits aim to:
- Improve road safety - Lower speeds reduce the likelihood and severity of collisions, helping protect all road users.
- Encourage walking, cycling and stronger communities - Slower streets encourage walking, cycling and outdoor activity, creating healthier and more welcoming communities.
- Reduce Traffic Noise - Lower speeds generate less noise creating calmer neighbourhoods.

A countywide YouGov survey suggests most people are in favour of 20mph limits around schools and where people live, but that main roads such as King Harry Lane, Watford Road, Marshalswick Lane or House Lane for example should remain at their current speed limit, but we want to hear your views on additional 20mph streets in St Albans through this survey.
