Project aims

Our project aims to:

  • Improve accessibility to make it easier to travel to and through the town centre
  • Make it easier for people to get around by providing a series of new and improved crossing points
  • Improve safety near schools and in the town centre
  • Provide safer access to Edwinstree School, Freman College and other community spaces on Bowling Green Lane
  • Maintain the town's heritage and create welcoming and sociable spaces

You said, we did

The project was first consulted on in 2024. We have listened to your feedback and made some design improvements.

You didn’t want the the tree outside the Black Bull pub to be removed

We will retain the tree

You liked the new benches

We will refurbish and rearrange the existing benches

You didn’t like the loss of so much parking in High Street

We will retain almost all the parking spaces

You were concerned about the raised features in High Street and Baldock Road

We have removed these from our plans

You supported the introduction of new crossing points and upgrading of existing crossing points

We will introduce two new crossing points in the High Street and upgrade the existing crossings on Baldock Road and Bowling Green Lane

You were concerned about the shared-use path on the eastern side of the High Street

We have rerouted this via the quieter western side of the High Street and Market Hill instead (except on market day)

You were worried about the introduction of the loading bay

We have removed the loading bay from our plans

You supported the introduction of a 20mph limit on Baldock Road and High Street

We plan to introduce this and are seeking your views on a wider 20mph area

What are we proposing?

The following plans show our proposals for Buntingford Town Centre.

The four key elements of our proposals have a number on, and further details of these can be found in the next section down this page.
An annotated map showing the Buntingford Town Centre Improvements on Baldock Road, the High Street and Market Hill. The labels point to: - An upgraded pedestrian crossing on Baldock Road - Refurbished and existing benches in the area outside the Black Bull pub - A new crossing across High Street near the Black Bull pub - New cycle parking near the Buntingford town sign - Resurfaced road surface along Market Hill - Extended pavement by the bus stop by the Crown Inn to improve accessibility - Community event space by the war memorial - New shared-use walking and cycling path by the war memorial - Two new benches by the war memorial An annotated map showing the Buntingford Town Centre Improvements on the southern end of High Street The labels point to: - Resurfaced road surface on Market Hill - Refurbished benches by the war memorial - Refreshed road marking by near St Peters Church - A new Zebra Crossing across High Street by Chapel End - A new shared-use walking and cycling path by the Devran Shish Restaurant

1. Upgrade of existing crossing on Baldock RoadAn artists impression of what the upgraded crossing on Baldock Road would look like. It shows the new zebra crossing across the road, with tactile paving and beacons at either end. There is a figure walking a bike along the left-hand side of the pavement, and another individual walking along the right-hand side of the pavement.

We are proposing an upgrade to the crossing on Baldock Road to make it easier and safer to cross the road.

2. Improved public realm space and new crossing by Black BullAn artist’s impression of what the improved public realm space and new crossing by the Black Bull would look like. It shows the new, signalised pedestrian crossing across the road, with a traffic light showing red on the left-hand side, and tactile paving on either side. An individual walking a bike can be seen on the left-hand side of the pavement behind the Buntingford Town sign. A wheelchair user is waiting to cross the road on the tactile paving on the left-hand side of the crossing by the traffic light. On the right-hand side of the crossing, a couple holding hands are beginning to cross the road heading left. In the background of the picture, you can see a tree and the town clock.

Near the Black Bull we propose installing a new signalised crossing to make it safer and easier to cross especially for those with mobility difficulties, and those using wheelchairs, shop mobility scooters or pushchairs.

We would also rearrange the seating to provide more pavement space and add in an additional bench.

The tree will remain in place and be untouched by the scheme.

3. New cycle route and road resurfacing along Market HillAn artist’s impression of what the new cycle route and road resurfacing along Market Hill would look like. It shows the area of Market Hill by the Crown Inn, looking up the hill. In the foreground of the picture, it shows the proposed extended pavement by the bus stop with a flush kerb to improve accessibility to the bus stop for wheelchair users. On the Market Hill itself, two bicycle cymbals are painted on the road to indicate the proposed cycle route.

As part of these proposals, we would resurface the road on Market Hill.

We would also create a cycle route along Market Hill (except on market day).

Improvements to the pavement by the bus stop would also be made to improve access for those with mobility issues, or using wheelchairs.

An artist’s impression of what the new crossing on High Street near Chapel End would look like. In the middle of the image, the new crossing is shown spanning across the High Street. It is a zebra crossing across High Street, with red tactile paving and belisha beacons on each side. On the right-hand side of the image, there is a couple holding hands beginning to walk across the crossing. In the background of the image, you can see St Peter's Church, and an individual walking with a bicycle on the left-hand pavement.

4. New crossing near Chapel End

We are proposing installing a new zebra crossing on High Street near Chapel End to make it easier and safer to cross the road.

We would also install new shared-use walking and cycling paths to connect to the shared use path along London Road and Station Road

Bowling Green Lane

Away from the town centre, we are also proposing upgrading the crossing on Bowling Green Lane to a new raised zebra crossing.

This will make it safer and easier for those walking and wheeling to access Edwinstree School, Freeman College and other community spaces in the area such as the scout hut and cricket club.

A map of Buntingford, with a red line showing where Bowling Green Lane. A caption titled crossing location is included, with a line pointing to where the proposed crossing on Bowling Green Lane is near Edwinstree Middle School. An artist’s impression of what the proposed crossing on Bowling Green Lane would look like. The crossing is in the middle of the image, spanning across the road. It is a zebra crossing, with red tactile paving and belisha beacons on either side of the road. A family with a young child are holding hands and crossing the road using the crossing on the left-hand side of the image. A couple are also holding hands on the right-hand side of the pavement walking in the direction of the crossing.

20 mph speed limits

Hertfordshire County Council is aiming to deliver more 20mph zones, in suitable areas across the county, where they are wanted by residents.

Reducing speeds to 20mph has proven benefits including:

  • Improved safety. A person hit at 30mph is fiver times more likely to be killed than at 20mph
  • Healthier communities. Safer streets encourage walking, cycling and outdoor activity
  • Cleaner and quieter streets. Lower speeds reduce emissions and noise pollution.
  • Stronger neighbourhoods. Calmer roads make public spaces more sociable and welcoming.

We are currently exploring options for 20mph speed limits in Buntingford.

The first option is a town-wide 20mph speed limit.

The blue shaded area on the plan below shows this proposed town-wide 20mph speed limit. It excludes the A10 Buntingford Bypass.

Clicking on the map will open the image in a new tab.
A map showing the area covered by the proposed town-wide 20mph speed limit. The roads included are highlighted by a blue area. Within the blue area, there are five stars noting the location of schools in the area, these being Buntingford First School,.Ewinstree School, Freman College, Layston First School and Millfield First School. Some key roads are also labelled, these are Ermine Street, High Street, Baldock Road, Hare Street Road, Station Road and the A10 Buntingford Bypass.

The second option is a localised 20mph speed limit on High Street and the following neighbouring roads:

High Street
Market Hill
Baldock Road (part)
Bowling Green Lane
Bowlers Mead
Dixon Place
White Hart Close
Norfolk Road
Freman Drive
Chequers Close
Aylotts Close
Station Road (part of)

The pink shaded area on the below plans shows this localised 20mph speed limit.

Clicking on the map will open the image in a new tab.

In the consultation survey you can give you support to both, one, or none of the options.
